The Viva Village Independent School in Mamelodi East, was established in 2014 with its first Grade R class. Since then, a Grade was added per year, until we welcomed our first Grade 7's in 2021. [in South Africa, the highest grade in primary school].
The school is situated within an informal settlement and utilises converted shipping containers as classrooms. In 2022 we were also able to build 2 permanent classrooms. Children receive 2 cooked meals per day and also regularly go home with food parcels for their families.
The school is home to 300 learners and has a faculty of 17 teachers, plus support staff.
The Viva Village Independent School is fully registered and compliant [EMIS 7004010] and provides an augmented CAPS curriculum, by SACE-registered, qualified educators.
Having a private school within an informal settlement, offering quality and equality in education, is a first for South Africa and a game-changer for underprivileged learners.
The Viva Village Independent School is a worthy and compliant recipient of Corporate funding and also individuals make a big difference by donating and volunteering.
The Viva Independent School, Refilwe Campus, was opened in 2021 with 19 learners accross all the Primary School Grades. The Mamelodi Faculty was able to teach at the Refilwe Campus, while COVID19 restrictions necessitated shifts with lesser learners in Mamelodi.
In 2022 the campus welcomed 63 learners and the school now has its own appointed faculty.
The school shares its Principal and Vice Principal with the Mamelodi Campus, with the Vice Principal teaching full-time at Refilwe.
Music, Art, Computer, Sport, Chess Club and Vegetable Gardening augment the CAPS curriculum.
