Food insecurity is a big challenge in South Africa and also in the slums of Brazil, where Viva operates. The Viva Feeding Scheme addresses food insecurity in several ways:
1. School Feeding Scheme - 2 cooked meals and a snack provided daily to all learners in our schools
2. Food parcels sent home to families of our learners
3. Food Drives to communities where we operate
4. Supporting partner organisations with food and thus creating a wider food distribution network
5. Growing vegetables
The Viva Feeding Scheme has the capacity to distribute thousands of food parcels at a time, with the help of our team, volunteers, community leaders and partner organisations. Donations of food and cash donations are optimised to effectively and swiftly hand out food parcels in vulnerable communities.
In December 2022, the German Embassy, Pretoria funded a food distribution of 1 120 food parcels - equivalent of close to 120 000 meals, within 4 days. Of the R 292 000 cash donation, only R 900 was spent on fuel and R 3 000.00 on packaging. 98,7 % of the funds went directly into groceries and vegetables for the distribution. We thank the German Embassy and all the stakeholders, the wonderful Viva Team and our partners in making this possible.
